Thought for the day

Following on from yesterday's post I have often wondered if all the money in the world was divided among the population evenly how long it would take for it to return to the status quo.

Whether by foul means or fair I am sure it would not be long before things started to change.

  1. Are you considering politics as a future? I think you SHOULD!

  2. No, politicians want all the money for themselves.

  3. Narh! Many would just ask for more and you'd spawn a new industry of con-artists trying to get someone else's share off them!

ps - wot happens when its all spent?

    1. That is what I was getting at , John. It wouldn't take long to reach the status quo.

  4. Equal amounts (say in US dollars) per capita would not have the same spending power in different countries, at least not to start with (until prices dropped in previously wealthy countries and rose in developing countries). So what your dream of would be iniquitous another ways, and international trade would FREAK OUT!

Life will never be fair, but at least democratic socialism is a political ethos that WANTS it to be fairer. I still read in awe about what the 1945 UK Labour government achieved within five or six years of having a decent working majority in parliament for the first time ever. Founding the NHS was a masterpiece of practical compassionate socialism, and still exists and still works, fundamentally, despite everything. There is no chance of a global government to implement similar measures for the entire earth's population, sadly. Even the UN has powerful national vetoes blocking concerted action.

    1. What I was suggesting is that it would not take long to reach the status quo if such a thing could happen: not that it should happen.

    2. I suppose my thoughts are along the lines that, human nature being what it is, some people would work hard and use the money to make it increase, some would use whatever foul means were at their disposal to get money from other people, some would spend up large and blow the lot while others would give it away to help others. In other words things would go on just as they are now and soon return to the status quo.
