Haemochromatosis (and a message for Cro)

I have mentioned that I have been feeling low for a while.  I had some blood tests a few weeks ago and it showed that my Ferritin levels are continuing to rise.  I was then given a blood test for Haemochromatosis.  It turns out that I have just the one gene so a note to Cro that it may be an idea to get checked if you haven't already been.  There is a possibility that you could have one or two of the genes and, even with just one it could be passed on to the younger Cro's (or is that Magnon's)

Not being of a medical bent I had not even heard of this but it appears that early diagnosis is vital.  You can check it at Haemochomatosis.  (Whoops I left an r out but it should still work)

I, meanwhile, am still unsure why I have high ferritin levels and my G.P. is arranging for me to have further blood tests in a couple of months and I will have an ultrasound shortly.  I don't feel ill just exhausted - it is an effort to get out of bed in the morning and by lunchtime I have a habit of falling asleep once again.

Still, I visited my lovely hubby today and he seemed fine although he told me he has just been elected Mayor of Whangarei and he is worried about how he is going to cope.  He later told me that he used to have a wonderful wife.  When I told him that I am his wife he got upset and said that I had left him.  I then visited my friend, Isabel, and we had a coffee and chat before I came home for lunch (and fell asleep).

Still, spring is definitely in the air and I have been managing to do a little weeding each day.

Every day there seems to be something new .  The colour of the new spring growth on the tree (the name of which eludes me at present) is just amazing.

  1. Goodness; you know how to frighten a chap! Never heard of Haemo-thingy, I'll certainly mention it to Kimbo as he may like to have the boys checked. As for me, I'm beyond saving.

    1. Cro, if you check the link it is an idea to get checked even at your age (but seeing you are younger than me you are obviously still a spring chicken).

  3. Susan, the treatment of that "h" thingy can be quite extensive .. I have usually been on the "flip side" with not enough Iron at times throughout my life, less complicated to treat. The colours in your gardens must make you feel good. I just had gotten a new Cookbook not long ago, "Cooking With Quinoa" The Supergrain by Rena Patten. I will be sure to post the Salad hopefully sooner then later, as there is apple in it and it now the time for apples here. Stay well and keep rested. "Just Me"

  4. Jean, Thanks for your call - much appreciated.
Cindy I have that book on hold at the Library - it is a new book they are purchasing and the wait is "unknown"

I had a look in bookstores and there were four books that looked good - two by Rena Patten on Quinoa and two New Zealand Gluten Free books - I decided to check the library and put a hold on this book. Hope it is not too many months till they get it.

As I mentioned to Jean - I only have the one gene so am a carrier - this doesn't help with why I have increasing levels of Ferritin.

  5. Susan: Here is the recipe for the salad at the Caregiver Day Away I had yesterday (sweet of the girl to write it out for me). Sorry I didn't take a photo, however will do so & blog same when I try myself, but in the meantime I thought you might like:

Rinse 1 cup Quinoa; add to 2 cup boiling water, simmering for 20-30 minutes until water is absorbed. Allow to mostly cool before combining with: 1/2 -1 cup sunflower seeds, 1 or 2 chopped apples & 1/4-1/2 cup dried cranberries(optional as she hadn't any in hers).

Vinigarette: 1/4 cup maple syrup, 1/4 cup of apple cidar vinegar, 2 Tbsp. Honey Mustard, 2 Tbsp. Olive Oil, 1/2 Tbsp. dried Mint.

She had served it the day before and brought it along to this event; still extremely very good this day later.

So happy the Quinoa Recipe book can be gotten thru your library !
