Christmas is over for another year

I had a pleasant Christmas Day - much better than last year.

Every year I receive a pewter ornament from my cousin in Canada (they come from Nova Scotia).  This year it was a polar bear which her cubs.

I started the day by attending a service at Christ Church in the Regent.  I must admit I have not been to church for a long time and the service had changed a lot.  It was, however, most enjoyable.

Following the service I went straight to the Rest Home and found my hubby being fed some "Rocky road" and wearing a Santa tie that was in his Christmas present from the home.  There seemed to be extra staff but I think it could have been the usual number but just that a lot of the residents had gone home for the day (or an hour or so).  As it is a hospital rather than the previous dementia unit he was in a lot are able to go home.  His lunch was going to be turkey, ham and lamb with all the trimmings.

I gave him his present (a red shirt in a brand he has always liked) and another toy for him to fiddle with.  I spent about an hour with him and he was quite happy when I left to go to lunch with my friend/hairdresser who lives around the corner.  She had two elderly widows for lunch as well as they would have been on their own.  In the afternoon I was pleased to get phone calls from both my stepchildren.

Boxing Day was quiet.  The weather has been miserable over the whole holiday period mainly drizzle with some heavy showers but very muggy - I see the humidity has gone down to 82% although it doesn't feel like it.

Today (it is now just after 5 p.m. on the 27th) I went with a friend on a dog walk and then went to visit M and help him with his lunch before going to the shops to change a couple of items.  The carparks and the shops were full - I thought having left it until after Boxing Day that it would have been a little easier.  Still I sorted everything that I needed.  The sun has finally come out.  I see that on Saturday we finally have a fine day forecast (although only the one day).

  1. I'm glad you had a nicer Christmas Day this year.
The mugginess has been pretty intense hasn't it? I don't particularly enjoy that aspect of Northland...thankfully it not for too long!

  2. We have had beautiful weather down our way, one of the hottest Christmas days ever. Too hot to eat, so we had our turkey on boxing day. Glad you had a better day than last year ((hugs))

  3. I am pleased that you had a happy Christmas day and that your husband was well cared for at the home. It was nice that you could then retire to your friends house to enjoy a Christmas lunch with others.

  4. Wonderful to hear you had a nice Christmas, Sue. I am feeling much better with the flu bug finally gone from my system (I have heard it has been everywhere). We are having a very light falling of snow here at the moment; it is very pretty when it is like this. We have been invited out for a Turkey Dinner today, so my Rob is quite happy about that since we never yet had one ourselves. I might make one Sunday this or next week for ourselves. Be happy and well. "Just Me" xx

  5. I see any number of pewter ornaments on your pretty tree. A pair of birds jump right out; they must be cardinals, my state bird.
    Have a peaceful new year.

    1. There could well be one of cardinals. They are made by Amos Pewters in Nova Scotia and each year is different with a card giving you the story of that year's ornament.

  6. The cool is just clearing here. Not that it got in the way of a wonderful fluid family flow. We start our Christmas-proper with tree decorating at Midsummer (21 Dec) and carry it through to Twelfth Night (6 Jan). The children and their friends have been circulating around different households playing Hobbit games, having water fights in the rain, and yesterday they were playing Hide 'n' Seek in the Secret Garden. I hope that the New Year brings ease and happiness for you.

    1. We have usually left our tree after 12th night as my husbands birthday is the 10th January and he always wanted them left for then. We then tended to leave them up until the end of the month (or when I had to move them all to dust).

  7. I'm glad your Christmas Day was a good one,Susan and hope the weather forecast for Saturday proves accurate. I'm with your previous commenter in keeping the full 12 days of Christmas, with the decorations going up shortly before Christmas Eve and staying up until Epiphany.
