QUEENS BIRTHDAY WEEKEND

Queens Birthday is a long weekend here in New Zealand.  The Weather forecast for the whole weekend has been pretty grim.  It wasn't too bad on Saturday morning for our early trip to the Growers'  Market, walking Sophie and a Supermarket shop but not long after we got home we had heavy rain and wind and thunderstorms.  This continued on and off (but mainly on) for most of the day.

During the night we had more heavy rain and on Sunday we awoke to a small pond in front of the house.  The ditch along the edge of the park behind us had blocked up and the water poured straight over our property and could not get away when it got to the garden edging.  Doug waded through and cut the edging, digging a trench through the garden and letting the water out and also clearing the offending ditch.  At this stage the rain stopped and the sun came out.  During the day we had several thunderstorms.

This morning it was still raining.  It would have been good to turn over in bed and go back to sleep but it was the morning of the Parkinsons' Walk and we knew that the leader of the walks would turn up so we went down to our meeting point.  There was one other lady who also turned up for the same reason but no Parkinsonians.  It was still raining on and off so we decided to just walk a short distance to a nearby cafe at the Town Basin and have our refreshments.  While we did this the sun came out so we decided on a walk to the Pedestrian Bridge and back.  I was a really enjoyable walk and the rain held off until after we got home when Doug did some more work on the ditch that had blocked up.

This is our current 10 day forecast.  This morning it read rain and thunderstorms for today.

  1. Wet here again, where do you get your weather forecast map? I go to Accuweather or Metservice, but I like your one's layout. Tolaga Bay, that family were so brave to be on the roof waiting for hours. We missed the heavy downpours, and hope it all moves offshore. Doug, sounds like you are very handy with a shovel too.

    1. The weather map seemed came on my taskbar with my windows 10 (I presume it is an app) I must say it is the forecast I prefer - it seems the most reliable and easy to read.

Yes, that was shocking with the Tolaga Bay family.
The amount of debris, trees etc, that had washed down was amazing.

According to the paper we had just under 110 mm in the 24 hours from 11 a.m. Saturday to 11 a.m. Sunday.

    2. Hi,I found it, hadn't known it was there!!! And I can, like Accuweather, go to all the other favourite places too. The logs that came down at Tolaga Bay were what is called " Slash" left behind after logging, a massive lot of wood, hope the locals claim them all for their own firewood after the water goes down..

  2. I do envy you your excellent Growers market.

Strong winds and drizzly here on the Kapiti coast but we have been spared heavy rain. It looks like you use the same weather site as your brother! I use Metservice and Accuweather like Nancy does.

  3. It is raining everywhere. I have been wearing my boots for weeks. It is nice to read that the sun came out somewhere.

  4. 'Light Rain' seems popular all over the world! After all the recently wedding business, the Queen's birthday was somewhat forgotten over here. Good to see it was celebrated elsewhere.

    1. The rain at the weekend was far from light but then the forecast was for heavy rain and thunderstorms - they got it right but, luckily, we got some fine breaks.
