THE END OF THE GOLDEN WEATHER.

We have had a wonderful summer and autumn but on Monday everything changed with extremely early snow storms in the south.  The temperature dropped rapidly here.  We haven't had much rain and there has been plenty of sunshine but the wind feels like ice.  I have even been lighting the pot belly stove.

I took these two photos last week.  My Tropical Frangipane is very happy against the garage wall.  The red geranium was more upright than I expected but looks good in its hanging basket.

The wind is set to turn to north west tomorrow so things should warm up.

Just as I posted this a cold heavy shower has come through.

  3. The 'Winterless North" (NOT) - No wonder some call this city 'Whangarain".

    1. The gardens could still do with some more rain though. It does tend to be very localised though - perhaps you have had more where you are.

    2. Actually I really love Whangarei and don't mind its weather AT ALL! It's lovely and green here most of the time and that can't happen without a large amount of rain every year.
I was bought up in Christchurch and certainly don't miss that lovely citys bleak winters. The winters up here are enough to enjoy and mark the seasonal changes and have a nice warm fire on our wood burner - so I am not complaining - life is good here : > )

    3. I love it here as well. Grew up in Surrey. Spent a few years in Auckland then about 40 in the Far North before moving here nearly six years ago. It is a great town.

  4. Hello Heather. Popped over to say hi. We have unseasonably warm weather in uk but I'm office bound so can't enjoy it. We have a frangipani we got in Madeira. It flowered last year but since has just been huge leaves on a stick! Sad . I love the scent

    1. Iam most impressed that you can grow frangipani there. I would have thought that frosts would have been a problem.

  6. That first cold wind of the coming winter is an ominous feeling. I hope winter will be gentle to you this year.

  8. After a very cold wet morning the sun is shinning through the windows - lovely!
Yes, I agree it is the end of the golden weather - it had to happen eventually!
What a glorious summer we had!

  9. We've been enjoying our first taste of warmth and sun after a long, grey and chilly winter. I hope yours proves not to be too bad. Your red geranium looks to me like a pelargonium and they are definitely upright. I have them in my outdoor post in France.
