South Island Day 3
We seem to be so busy that finding time to sort through these photos has been hard. Anyway, on our first morning at Westport we drove to the start of the Cape Foulwind walk to see the seals. At this stage Cyclone Debbie was bearing down on New Zealand and, with the West Coast being notorious for its wet weather, we were expecting the worst. Although it was windy with salt mist it was a pleasant walk. Looking it up on google it looks as though it was just under 4 kms each way and was an easy track. We walked on past the seal colony to Tauranga Bay car park where there was an enterprising lady with a mobile coffee shop selling not only coffee but tea, hot chocolate and light meals.

We visited there in 1986, and it looks just the same.Windy, forlorn, a harsh coastline, and rocks and pools perfect for the seals.
ReplyDeleteYes Jean it is a very harsh coast. We were so lucky with the weather though. I do hope that you are doing o.k. and no more trips in the yellow van.

DeleteI have just read somewhere that NZ has been voted 'the best place to live in the world'. It certainly does look very nice.
ReplyDeleteI reckon it is a pretty good place - that is why I have stayed here for over 50 years and will spend the rest of my days here.
DeleteWe drove along the coast from Haast to Hokitika in almost hurricane weather, when we toured NZ in 2005. In your photos it looks much calmer, but the one advantage (we were told) is that the notorious sand flies don't bite when it's stormy.
ReplyDeleteSeveral people were attacked by sand flies but for some weird reason they left me alone. Bugs usually seem to fly from miles around to eat me but not these ones.
