I have been making periodic checks on my bananas but obviously not in the past few days. On Monday I bought two bunches in the supermarket and last night Doug went down the garden and told me that the bananas are turning yellow.
We checked today and some had started to split so we picked the bunch.
I have cut off all the bananas that had turned colour or split and the remaining bunch is now hanging in the third "woodshed".
I weighed the bananas that I cut off and there were over three kilograms so it looks as though there could be about 10 kgs altogether.
Have tried one of the bananas and it was delicious.
Just as well I like bananas.
I can see " banana cake", " Banana muffins" Bananas with maple syrup. smoothies with bananas, maybe some left to really ripen and frozen for baking later on. What a massive crop, well done. Do you grow passion-fruit too? Cheers, Jean.
ReplyDeleteHopefully soon - no oven at present!!!
DeleteNo passionfruit but I do have a couple of granadilla vines that are setting fruit.
Banana 'Tarte Tatin' is good. Why did you buy two whole bunches? I tend to buy just smallish bunches (6 or 7), because they go off so quickly. Pity they won't stay looking like the top picture, they look nice like that.
ReplyDeleteTwo bunches because they were on special (2 for $4.00) so bought one for me and one for Doug although he has most meals here so he only took a few of them.
DeleteAlso I hadn't realised how close my ones were to ripening.
Haven't attempted a gluten free pastry yet so no tarte tatin.
Love bananas and start off every day with one. Two bunches for $4.00 sounds like a real bargain. Lots of potassium in them.
DeleteApart from loving eating them I also put the skins around my rose bushes.
DeleteIsn't it great being able to grow bananas - that is a great sized bunch! Good on you (or Doug!) for being onto it though - usually I have some that have not only split but also starting to go black before I realise they are ripening. I can give you my gluten free pastry recipe if you like, just email me :-)
ReplyDeleteLast year I found a bunch of smaller ripe bananas on the ground behind a bush. They were still delicious.
DeleteThanks for the offer of recipe - have emailed you.
We can’t keep enough bananas when the grandchildren are around, you would think they are a bunch of monkeys.
ReplyDeleteI can imagine. My grandchildren are adults and living away. I am sure none of them will go to waste.
DeleteI'm really jealous. I wish we could grow banana trees here.
ReplyDeleteLove from Mum
xx
You do better with the cold climate fruit and veg than I do here.
DeleteWe love bananas, a regular weekly staple in my fruit bowl. How nice woudl it be to have a bunch in the back yard to pick.
