Rangitoto Island sits majestically just off the Auckland coast, a short 25 minute cruise from downtown Auckland. Visible from Mission Bay to Cheltenham Beach, this 600 year old volcano boasts a unique landscape of rugged lava crops, lush native bush and sandy coves. Walk to the top for spectacular 360 degree views of Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf islands, or hop on board our Volcanic Explorer road train tour for a guided island experience.
We went on the 4wd road train and then walked 300 steps to the summit. It was a most enjoyable day.
It ended up being a long day as on the return ferry trip two ladies "forgot" to disembark at Devonport and went on to Auckland City. We had to wait for them before we set off back home.

There are some baches (holiday homes) still on the island.

That looks like a very interesting trip. Not sure that i would have the stamina to get to the summit.
ReplyDeleteThe road train was well worth it. We had a commentary and it saved a lot of walking over the lava.
DeleteIn all the years we lived in South Auckland, we didn't go to Waiheke Island, Rangitoto or Kawau Island. What a climb, and from the Auckland side, it always looks very impressive,
ReplyDeleteI spent several years in Auckland and Doug grew up in Helensville but neither of us had been to Rangitoto. Well worth the trip.
DeleteLove your pictures. That little train looks like the one they have at the Steam Rally(only they use a tractor) to ferry people from the top field to the one where they do all the ploughing etc. The trip sounds lovely x
ReplyDeleteYes, it was a great trip. I hope things are going well for you and that the sale was good.

I've never been to Rangitoto considering I grew up in Auckland and lived there for 20 years but I worked in Devonport and the central city - I miss it alot.
ReplyDeleteIt is a lovely city - a bit crowded now.
