WHAU VALLEY DAM

Our Parkinson Walk today was up Whau Valley Road to the Dam.  We were all shocked to see how low the Dam is.  It has been a wonderful summer and autumn but we hadn't realised just how little rain we have had.  The forecast was for a cold and wet Queen's Birthday Weekend  but Auckland received a lot more rain than us and have for the whole year so far.  We had some showers and it has been cold.  In fact when we were at the Dam my phone told me it was still only 7 degrees.

There is not usually a "beach" at the Dam.

It is a bit hard to see but the round structure in the foreground is, in fact, the overflow.  We need a lot of rain before we get anywhere near the overflow level.

The view looking back down the valley

Once again we didn't need our raincoats.  It was a lovely day and a very nice walk.

LATER: I JUST CHECKED THE COUNCIL WEBSITE AND THE DAM WATER LEVEL  IS AT 63%.

  1. It is worrying here too..we're just getting some steady rain, making the rivers look better...but yours makes one understand why you see companies selling water near you.

    1. Water is a big issue here with some being sold to China much to everyone's disgust.

  2. We'll soon all have to make our own provision for water; as in days gone by. Pray for rain, and have an efficient filter.

    1. Here, if you are in the country you collect your own water or get it from a bore. When we were in the north (for over 40 years, we provided our own water.

  3. We have droughts every few years and it can be frightening. That first rain that comes after one brings on a sigh of relief. We now, though, are having the opposite. It rains constantly and the storms are intense and have brought with it much flooding and tornado warnings.

    1. I have a cousin just north of Toronto and they have just had severe flooding. The weather everywhere seems to have gone berserk. I hope your weather improves. At least you are heading towards summer.

  4. We've got water issues too, and it's quite frightening.
Just like the air we breath, water is life.
    Your photos are lovely!

    1. Yes, we cannot live without water. I don't think our dam is anything to worry about as we are headed into winter but we got a shock that it was so low. Thanks about the photos.

  5. Here in NE Texas we have a huge lake called Texoma. It's man made and one of the largest in the USA. In the 80's, Texas had a terrible drought for years. The milkman actually delivered water with the milk. Texas went on a binge of building manmade lakes and we are benefiting from it now so bless the people back then who thought ahead. Hope others will be able to think their way out of water issues as there's no future without a future water source.

    1. What great foresight. Where my stepdaughter is in New South Wales there has been an ongoing drought for what seems like a couple of years. I know they have been buying truck loads of water in that period. They are also being told that the drought is expected to go on over winter and into next summer.
