It might be a couple of years ago as I used to bring a small annuity over from England by using a U.K. cheque and banking it into my New Zealand account but I started doing that by internet banking and it is so much easier.
I know my brother mentioned last year that his bank in the U.K. did not have internet banking which surprised me and was wondering about other places.
Are cheques still used where you live?
Firelighters?
Cheques, like money, will soon be a thing of the past. More scope for scammers, and less physical control over how much we're spending. I can see more people getting into debt as a result.
ReplyDeleteYes, hard cash will be next to go. Only use it at the Growers' Market
DeleteStill use them here but I can't remember the last time we used one.
ReplyDeleteIt is years since we used them but a lot of older people use them all the time and will miss them. (Still cannot consider myself "older")
DeleteWe still have them.. generally used when the internet fails!!
ReplyDeleteAs gz mentions they are a useful backup to have to hand.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen a cheque here in Greece. I suppose they must have used them once. We are now electronic all the way thanks to an economic crisis and then covid. I can remember my parents always used cheques even in the supermarket which seemed strange to me. But that was years ago. Then in later years it was your Epos(?) which seemed so alien and so advanced. Took us a long time to get to that stage
ReplyDeleteYes, "EFTPOS" electronic funds transfer at point of sale
DeleteWe are a bit in the Stone Ages here and I still have a checkbook. I pay certain bills via check. We're heading down the check-less route, but it's kind of slow-going.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds as though we may be the only country getting rid of cheques. We generally pay using credit cards unless there is a charge for it or a small "Ma and Pa" business.
ReplyDeleteI think the banks here in Kerikeri are starting to zone cheques out too, alot of my clients are elderly people and they have been complaining about not being able to use them.
ReplyDeleteThis was prompted by an ad in the Northern Advocate that NZ banks will not accept cheques by mid-year and they cannot accept cheques after 18th June. It will be hard for elderly people who do not use computers especially with the number of banks that have closed.
DeleteIt has been years since I last wrote (or received) a cheque. Internet banking is so much easier :)
ReplyDeleteSame here but there are still lots of older people who do not and never will use the internet.
DeleteStill used by many people in France. In fact I have to pay a bill by cheque this evening. Helen in France
ReplyDeleteIt seems as though we are the only ones stopping the use of cheques. My step-daughter in Australia has just told me that they are still in use there and most of our banks are Australian owned.
