When I read about this bird last week I thought that was a description but it is actually it's name. One washed up here in Whangarei on Tuesday and is now at the local Bird Recovery Centre. It was found, barely alive washed up in the waves on the shore just off Beach Road where we often walk.
It appears to have come in on the same air flow coming from the Tropics that has brought our muggy weather. It is a juvenile and has not yet grown it's long tail feathers.
By chance, weather permitting, our walk on Monday is around the grounds at the Museum and Bird Recovery Centre so, hopefully, we may be able to see it.
The photo below (from our local newspaper) is of Robert Webb, who runs the Bird Recovery Centre with his wife, holding the bird.
It is indeed. You don't need flashy colours all the time
ReplyDeleteand unusual as I think of Tropical birds being very colourful.
DeleteWow, to think it landed right near you.I Googled it, the chicks are so adorable, hope this one survives and will they release it, or get it somehow sent back to the island??? Where it once lived? Wet here but thankfully a lot cooler at 20C this morning. Hooray for the rain, secretly or loudly, I am hoping for a deluge at Parliament Grounds!!!
ReplyDeleteWe agree about the deluge at Parliament Grounds. Heat and humidity worse, apparently same as Fiji. The plan is to release the bird at the Poor Knights.
DeleteLovely bird. They must be very unusual if only found when beach wrecked. Hope this one recovers to fly on its way
ReplyDeleteAwesome photo, spotted you on a mutual blog friends blog and thought I'd pop in to say hi. Always fun to meet new bloggers.

Sorry about the wrong link above. Didn't realize I had something else on my clipboard. https://4ccccs.blogspot.com/2022/02/blanket-of-many-colors-tadah-american.html
ReplyDeleteWanted to pop back in to tell you the blanket was knitted, corner to corner to the half way point, then start the decrease to form the squares/diamonds. Glad you were able to get the book on your list. It's quite detailed, but do get passed that. These woman will make you proud. Woman just don't get the credit they deserve.
