YELLOW ADMIRAL

As anyone who follows this blog knows, we have lots of Monarch butterflies in the garden.  Apart from that the only butterfly we tend to see is the common white which is my enemy when it lays eggs on my brassicas.  Doug was quite surprised a couple of days ago to see a different butterfly.  It was a Yellow Admiral.

It was in quite a sorry state with its wings quite tattered.  It was pleased to find the Mexican Marigold and stayed there drinking the nectar for some time.

Doug has released 375 Monarch butterflies this season and is still releasing them in spite of the drop in temperature.  A very cold 15°C today.

  1. Lots of Butterflies here this year. They love to come indoors so I'm constantly putting them out again.

    1. Yes, the Monarch is lovely. It is our usual one. That wind is very cold.

  3. That must be getting chilly for most butterflies. Good to make the acquaintance of the Yellow Admiral - we only have red ones here.

    1. No butterflies on the wing today. Still too cold for them. It will warm up a bit in a day or so and they will be back.

  4. I hope that the dose of nectar from your Mexican Marigold helped it on its way - I looked it up on the internet and it does show similarities to our Red Admiral butterfly.

    1. The Red Admiral is more common here although not in our garden. We must look at getting some nettles and see if we can source some caterpillars.

  6. I don't think I've ever seen those butterflies before, just the monarchs and white cabbage ones. It's an even colder 1 degree here right now.

  7. It was a record 30C here today. Very uncomfortable, let me tell you. The Yellow Admiral, a tad worn like the Velveteen Rabbit is really lovely. Glad that he was able to drink his fill of your garden flowers. I hope the Monarchs Doug released have a fruitful life!

    1. 6c here first thing but a lovely sunny day great for drying washing. 30 is too hot for me. The Monarchs will overwinter in trees in the park behind us.

  8. I've not seen a red admiral, yellow admiral, or painted lady, for years now. We used to see all of them quite frequently.
