RAIN

We have had a lovely, gentle rain today and yesterday afternoon.  More, possibly heavier, is forecast for tonight and tomorrow.  I am not sure if it will  enough to break the drought but it is good that we don't have to water the garden for a few days at least.

Prior to that I had been looking for some chrysanthemum plants.  I finally saw some advertised at Mitre 10 as well as some Romanesco cauliflower so we went in with the intention of buying both.  When we got there the chrysanthemums were dwarf and sad looking plants so we left them.  We did, however come across some dahlias and came home with 4 dahlia plants, one zinnia and some veg seedlings.

Then at Saturday's market Doug saw a chrysanthemum plant.   It was pot bound and a bit lanky but we bought it and I have already used the flowers in a couple of vases (one for us and the other for a neighbour).  Everything is now planted and enjoying the rain.

There should be more chrysanthemums at Saturday's Market.

  1. Good to have the rain..just hope you don't get it in torrents....

Chrysanthemums are members of the daisy family? They grow well from cuttings I do know. That is a nice one, I like the single flowers rather than the doubles

  2. I bought some Chrysanthemum flowers last winter and tried to grow some from cuttings but, although they started off well, they didn't survive.

    1. As I have said previously I endeavour to have a year long supply of flowers to cut for the house.

  4. We had rain overnight too. Flowers year round, that would be wonderful, you will have some planning to do, but I have greenery, a Leucodendron, and alstromerias that seem to flower for ages. As well as Breath of Heaven, Rosemary, and ladder ferns. Spring bulbs are all planted too. Sunday there is a huge market here so might see if they have some flower plants, pansies last all winter.

    1. Yes, alstroemerias are great for long flowering. Still raining here. Nice and gentle. Hope all well with you both.

  5. I heard you'd be having a lot of rain from an atmospheric river. I hope it misses you

    1. We still have an orange rain warning for today. Auckland seems harder hit at the moment. We will most likely get more later this morning.

  6. All looking very healthy. And doesn't it feel good to have rain when your garden is parched. We gardeners want it all our own way!

    1. Yes, it was very much needed. A drought was declared a few weeks ago. Nothing like nice gentle rain to perk everything up.
