HAPUKA

Yesterday, we had nearly 5 year old great-grand daughter for lunch with her father.  We thought she was coming with her grandmother but plans were changed.  Then, after that we both had appointments with the Osteopath and that was going to be our day but in the morning Doug had a phone call from his nephew to say he had been fishing and would we like some Hapuka.

After our appointments we headed north 20 kms to Whakapara and spent some time having a coffee and catch up returning with a piece of smoked Hapuka and about 5kgs of Hapuka fillets.  The fillets were so large that I had to cut them into steaks and this is what we ended up with.

and this is it all bagged up.  We have just had some for lunch and it was delicious.

There was also a plate of "trimmings" for the cat and seagulls.

  2. Yum yum Susan! I adore hapuka, it is one of the best eating fish ever. How wonderful that Doug's nephew shared his catch with you. Enjoy :)

    1. He enjoys fishing and his wife and two sons (who have now flown the nest) don't eat fish. We are more than happy to help him out. He feeds the whole neighbourhood.

  6. I don't think we have Hapuka in this hemisphere, or maybe we've eaten them all! I love all fish so I'm sure it's excellent eating!

    1. It is one of the best, John. The hāpuku, hapuka or whapuku (Polyprion oxygeneios), also known as groper, is a wreckfish of the family Polyprionidae, found around southern Australia, southern South America, South Africa, Tristan da Cunha and New Zealand at depths between 30 and 800 m.

  7. I have never eaten hapuka, but it looks like a lovely fleshy fish. Lucky you to have so many delicious fish fillets in your freezer ready to make some tasty meals.

    1. Yes, Rosemary, it is delicious. It is great having the supply in the freezer. We will eat it several times a week as I don't like keeping fish in the freezer for too long.
