RURAL DELIVERY

 I have mentioned previously that Doug's youngest daughter is a Rural Delivery Driver, this means that she is self employed and actually has two small runs next to each other delivering mail as well as courier items.  The combined runs are about 330 kilometres and she delivers 5 days a week.

On top of this she also takes the bulk mail to the township of Waipu 40 kilometres away early every morning.  She starts work at about 4 a.m.  takes the mail to Waipu, goes back to the depot for her Rural Delivery mail.  On a reasonable day she gets home about 4 p.m.

She has a van and covered trailer to take the mail to Waipu and has just bought a second new Ute with a canopy for her Rural Delivery runs.  Yesterday she came around so that Doug could make up "shelves" for the front seats of the utes to put the trays of letters on ready for delivery.

New Zealand Post has recently changed its vehicle colour from red to blue. The N.Z. Post Logo still has to go on.



Doug made two of these, one for each ute.  The pegs at the back are for the seatbelt to go around to stop it all shooting forward when she stops and the bit at the front is to stop the trays of mail from doing the same.

    1. Yes, the hours are long and that is just on an average day. Before Christmas it gets a lot busier. It is always good when one can get Dad to make little things up.

  3. Doesn't NZ Post have electric vehicles now or is that up to the independantly owned franchisee ownerss, not sure. But it's a nice car though.

    1. I think they are working towards an all electric fleet but don't think there are electric utes available here yet (or if they are the price is prohibitive). The cost of two new utes and a van are bad enough as it is. 330 kms a day mainly on unsealed roads is tough on vehicles.

  4. I have seen a couple of blue Rural Delivery vehicles recently and wondered why they weren't red - now I know!
    Our RD people work hard (my bridesmaid and husband had a run for many years, and I saw the hours they put into it), and are an underappreciated asset to the rural community. Well done, Doug's Daughter :)

    1. Yes, they do work hard. Doug was a Rural Delivery Driver for a while as well (in Helensville). I don't think the new blue livery will be as easy to see as the red ones. Thinking about winding country roads.

  5. hi again Susan, in answer to your comment on my blog, no-one who works in a supermarket gets a discount, we pay the same amount as everyone else, although a discount is a nice idea it just doesn't happen.
