WEATHER AND TOMATOES

It has been hot and dry for the past week or so with daytime temperatures of 26 or 27 degrees C. and night time of about 20 degrees.

On Monday we have our first Parkinson walk since the Christmas break and the weather is due to change.  Temperatures still good but much needed rain forecast (although we could do without it on Monday morning).

I have finally picked a couple of tomatoes and there is just one more ripening.  When they are finally in full fruiting mode we will have more than enough.  The top two photos are the German ones with the points on the end, a delicious tomato hanging like grapes.

The tomatoes are just starting to ripen on the plants I got from a neighbour. The spray on them is preventative copper.

By 9 a.m. this morning I had watered the garden, done some weeding and a load of washing was done and pegged out while  Doug had mowed the lawns.  The washing dried while we had breakfast.

Yesterday, they started to reseal our road and have just come back to finish the job.  Lots of roadworks needed as there was so little fine weather for the work to be done last year.

  1. The German tomatoes are interesting..the Italian Roma that I grow also have a point. Are they also very fleshy ?

    1. This is what the website says about the German tomatoes. They are not ripe yet but I don't remember them being particularly fleshy but they had a great flavour.
A fantastic cherry tomato. The plants are laden in summer. Riesentraube means "giant bunches".
Produces bunches of large red fruit with pointed ends.

Heirloom variety dating back to 1800's from Germany.
      Good full bodied complex flavour.

  2. Ditto for the German tomatoes. They hang like grapes. How big are they?

    1. They are larger than the usual cherry tomato. Still growing at present.

  3. First tomatoes are always special, we are using our frozen ones for soup, taste of summer on cold days.

    1. I freeze any extra ones whole in bags and use for soups and sauces in winter.

  4. You sound like me - do everything as early as possible in the morning! We are meant to have rain tomorrow as well - I hope it doesn't reach you until after lunch :)

  5. It's been a slightly wetter Summer than we had last year so far so some of the veges in my garden haven't done as well as I'd hoped but I've just harvested some purple cabbage so I'm happy with that.
