BLACKBERRY AND APPLE CRUMBLE

When we first moved to the Far North in the early 1970's we used to collect blackberries  from various farms.  Gradually, over the years the blackberries must have been cleared and it ended up with us not getting any blackberries.

A year ago we purchased a raspberry and a blackberry cane at the local Growers' Market.  We are now harvesting the most delicious large blackberries.  At first we thought we would just get a few and were eating them "as is".  We then realised that we were not keeping up so last week I made a blackberry and apple crumble.  It was delicious.  We are still picking blackberries and there are still more forming.  The raspberry is just starting to set fruit so we hope it is as successful.  If not it will come out and be replaced by another blackberry from the first one.

The funny thing is that my memory of picking blackberries in England is that they were an autumn fruit whereas it is spring/early summer here.

    1. Thank you, yes it is getting better. I get a shock when I see my reflection or if I happen to touch my still painful nose but the bruising is tending towards yellow now.

  2. Excellent. We used to go blackberry picking in a portion of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park every autumn. I want to say in September it was. And, like your experience, the blackberry bushes that used to be are no more. I had heard that they were considered an invasive species and were therefore removed.

    May the raspberries be as bountiful!

    1. I grew up with rows of raspberries and my mother bottled them. By the end of winter had enough of bottled raspberries. Now I am really hoping these do well.

  4. I grew up with blackberry hedges, and the prickles. At our previous home, we had thornless blackberry bushes, and froze, cooked, made jelly and gave heaps away. The raspberry canes did not do as well.Your crumble, a yummy desert all year round. Hope the bruising and pain is lessening by the day.

  5. We still have loads of blackberry bushes around where we live, and always pick loads during September. Leave them until October and the saying goes that the Devil spits on them and they are ruined.
