AN APPLE FOR A TOMATO

Doug always feeds the birds.  He buys a bag of wild bird seed every week as well as dog sausage for the seagulls and fruit - citrus or apples.  Recently, when I suggested I should pick the tomatoes before they were quite ripe so that the birds wouldn't get them he said to leave them as the birds would eat the apple he gives them instead of the tomatoes.

Yesterday, I didn't get around to picking our vegies until about 7 p.m. and was shocked to find two half eaten tomatoes on the ground.  It turned out that with Doug starting a new project yesterday and finding an unexpected problem he had forgotten to put an apple for the blackbirds hence them eating the tomatoes.

He remedied the situation straight away and no more eaten tomatoes.  It obviously works.

  1. You sound like us. We buy cat biscuits for the seagulls and dog rolls for the foxes, that's on top of the cat food for our 5, we live on jacket potatoes, lol

    1. Yes, birdseed, fruit for the birds, dog roll for the seagulls especially the one with no feet, different dog roll for the labrador plus various biscuits, home made food and treats, Kim the cat is getting fussy as she gets older. At present she has dried food and one particular wet food sachet plus treats - our trolley is full before we get anything for ourselves.

  2. I am currently putting out 'greaseballs' for the smaller birds. Unfortunately the Magpies have discovered a way of detaching the whole things from their hangers; even taking away the green plastic mesh in which they hang. If I catch them.....

    1. Perhaps you will need to invest in cotton mesh that is biodegradable.

  4. Clever Doug! It seems like a very fair exchange. Enjoy your tomato harvest.

    1. He feeds them anyway and it is good if it stops them eating the tomatoes.

  5. It seems so many of us load up the trolley with anything or everything for all the others and we humans come last. I have not seem birds eat tomatoes, but when I think of it, last summer several had bits missing. Our one plant is right by the house so should be safe!!
