First of all in this morning's paper we read that our temperature was actually 37.4 degrees yesterday according to a weather station near us. No wonder we felt exhausted. Thank goodness it is a lot cooler today but no sign of rain.
When I wrote about A.H. Reed Park blogger, Local Alien, mentioned that she had a book on A.H. Reed and was glad there was a park named after him.
He was a publisher, writer and walker/tramper see here to read about his biography.
In 1957 the scenic reserve adjoining his old home at Parahaki was named the A. H. Reed Memorial Kauri Park. Maturing kauri trees known to be at least 500 years old can be easily viewed close up from a raised walkway through the forest canopy.
It is a lovely walk especially on a very hot day.
Reed's family left for NZ about the time my (English) family left for Tasmania (before coming to San Francisco).
ReplyDeleteIt would seem that walking over hill and dale kept Reed hale. I would have loved to have chanced upon AH while out on a walk.
Speaking of which, I could not handle a walk in 37 degree weather. -too dang hot.
He sounds a fascinating man. Luckily on the day of our walk it was slightly less and it was good to be in the shade.
DeleteCooler here today too, thank goodness. A memorial park, a fitting honour for a remarkable man.
ReplyDeleteI think it is 25 today and it almost seems cold. Lovely. Yes, it is good that the park is named after him.
DeleteThe book I have is The Four Corners of NZ. I knew he was a publisher but he was an avid tramper and entertaining writer. I loved the book.
ReplyDeleteThe park sounds amazing with its raised walkway and 500 year old kauris
I just checked our local library and, surprisingly, they only have two of his books and that is not one of them. I must keep an eye out for it.
DeletePs thank you, Susan for the follow up
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear that cooler conditions have arrived. Perhaps rain is next.
ReplyDeleteAt 25 degrees today it almost seemed cold.
