We had a walk through the grounds to the waka house which shelters Ngātokimatawhaorua, the largest canoe of its type.
We finished the tour at the Meeting House where we had a ceremonial greeting and a cultural performance.
By now it was lunch time so we went the short distance to our hotel for lunch and then went back to see James Busby's house and the two museums.
The views across the Bay of Islands were amazing.
Lots of links rather than descriptions as things are busy here today and tomorrow.
Lovely to see the same under a shelter..we saw it in the open.
ReplyDeleteIt will be busy tomorrow...first day of the Northland Tour tomorrow from Whangarei to Russell, then Paihia to Opononi the day after..day three to Dargaville then the last day back to Whangarei. Not sure how many riders there are this year.
Yes, it is good that it is under cover. There was a race on last Sunday as lack of parking at Kensington Stadium when we went to the gym with cyclists everywhere. We have not seen anything about the Race and luckily did not meet it yesterday as we went up to Kaitaia for a funeral.
DeleteHow come autocorrect turns waka to same?!!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering that as well.
DeleteIt looks to have been an interesting visit.
ReplyDeleteIt was really interesting - much better than going without the tour guide. The museums are great. The newest Museum is about the Maori Battalion and it held particular interest for us as one of Doug's uncles was in the Maori Battalion and died on Crete.
DeleteWe've visited there twice now and have learned alot, it's good that the museum is there now.
ReplyDeleteYes, both museums were really interesting and very well done. We enjoyed the whole experience.
DeleteIt looks a nice place and a nice visit.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely.
DeleteThat meeting house has some serious carving work. It's interesting how all the different parts of it stand for something.
ReplyDeleteYes, there are some intricate carvings.
