Lamb Roast

I can't remember the last time I had a roast of lamb.  In the late '60's lamb was very cheap in New Zealand.  In fact we bought a deep freezer as it did not cost much more to buy a whole side of lamb compared to just a leg.  It was the poor man's food.

Not sure when everything changed but things have been reversed and lamb has been expensive and chicken which used to be a special meal is now much cheaper.

So I was thrilled when I saw legs of lamb on special for $10.00 a kg.  I asked the kind man in the butchery department whether he would be willing to cut one in half for me which he did giving me two small roasts - one about a kilogram and the shank part slightly larger.

I roasted the smaller joint earlier in the week and last night roasted the shank end and shared it with a friend.  It was delicious.  The photo comes via  Cro (who co-incidentally posted on lamb recently) as I completely forgot to take a photo.

  1. Your roast looks so tasty, and yes, so expensive, I always wonder what do the sheep farmers get ,it passes through so many hands before we put it on our tables. Greetings to you, Susan for the season, take care, enjoy the sunshine, and look forward to 2013 with peace in your heart. From Jean

  2. When shopping this week, my supermarket had frozen legs on offer (not the ones I previously wrote about). They were €5.30 a kilo. The man in front of us at the check-out had bought 10. Unfortunately our freezer is FULL, but if there are any left next week, I'll buy a couple. I noticed that they were all about €11 each (less than £9); amazing. Lady M said we should buy a second freezer. They get cheaper and cheaper..... I'm completely baffled!

    1. That is cheaper than here - I just checked and NZ$10 is Eur 6.25. Unfortunately, my freezer, even though it is very small is far from full.

  3. We pay ridiculously high prices here for our own lamb. And to add insult to injury, all the best meat is exported!

  4. That looks delicious, Susan and I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. Lamb is a real treat over here, too, while chicken is everyday food - so different from my own childhood 50 or more years ago.

    1. Exactly - mind you I don't buy the standard chickens as I don't like the way they are farmed.

  5. I gasped when I seen Lamb ! I love lamb, however it is so expensive. My friends own a Sheep farm. We did buy one wee small roast not quite 2lb or 1kg which cost $18.00 ! I must get that into the roaster soon. I had a whole lamb leg for when I turned 30 (long time ago now :) ) with Mint Jelly my sister had made. Cro's picture looks so yummy...was it done on the BBQ?
