HONEY

Honey is expensive here and it was just over a fortnight ago that we were at the Tikipunga Market and bought a 2kg honey.  Later on Doug's Grand-daughter and Grandson's partner were here and we said we would buy some for them.

Unfortunately, at the following market the "Honey Man" was not there.

Prior to this we have always bought a local Manuka and Bush Honey first from the Growers' Market and later, when he stopped going, from the Supermarket.  I decided to see if we could buy it on-line and found the price for12 x 1kg to be quite a bit less than half price.  Unfortunately, when I tried to find the cost of freight it said they did not send to Whangarei so I emailed them to see if we could purchase it from the property.

It is only a short drive from here.  We were going to leave it until we had nearly finished the 2kg jar but because things are uncertain with the new Covid case we decided to get it today.  It was a pleasant drive.  We went one way and came back another and it was a 20 minute drive return.  We enjoyed the drive and now have lots of cheap honey.

I am sure various members of the family will be enjoying it.

  1. Honey is expensive everywhere. I look back fondly on the days when I knew someone with their own beehives.

    1. When my late husband and I had our 6 acre property a friend had a hive on it and gave us some of the honey.

  2. We get our honey locally where no sprays on used on the property so the honey is mostly wildflowers and alfalfa. It is quite delicious, and while a little pricey, I don't look upon it as expensive. When I see the amount of effort that goes into producing it, I am more than willing to have Steve, the apiarist, get a decent return on his effort. All of life does not involve getting the best price!

    1. As I said this is local, it is also the best and the one we have always bought. He was telling us that he learnt from an old beekeeper and where he has his hives so that there is no pasture honey in it.
Even though it is less than half the price we have been paying, he will be getting more than the supermarket pays him which is good. A win/win situation.

    1. That was just the start of it. I got a lot of tomatoes frozen for our winter casseroles and we both did some gardening. The afternoon was reading time, too hot for much else. Then watering.

  4. Amazing that you found it so cheap and so close. You'll know for next time too!
I love the fresh honey. We buy from the beekeepr too but it isn't too expensive. Just good, and different flavours according to where the bees are feeding

  5. Bee keepers always bring their hives here for the Chestnut flowering season. They give much of the resulting honey to the landowners, who then give some to me. It's dark, and not the most pleasant tasting honey, which is probably why they're so generous with it.

  6. Yes honey is extremely expensive here, we don't buy it very much but when we do it lasts quite a while.
