SUMMER

Yesterday was the first day of  the Meteorological summer. The days are getting longer. Sunrise 6 a.m. Sunset 8.25 p.m. The temperature is in the early 20's centigrade which I am happy with.  Monday is forecast to be 25 degrees.

We had hoped that our early potatoes, Cliff's Kidney would be ready for Christmas.

Noticing they were dying down I dug the first root yesterday. The potatoes aren't huge but there were plenty of them and they were delicious.

We are back to going to the Growers' Market on Saturday mornings.  Didn't need much as our garden is producing enough greens to keep us going (sugar snap peas, beans, courgettes and cucumbers will be ready in a day or so.  We just bought tomatoes, avocados, spring onions and a punnet of lettuce seedlings to keep the supply going.  We then went to the supermarket and were home at about 8 a.m.

  1. There is something so tasty about spuds from your own garden. When I was a child on the farm, my Dad had a HUGE garden. the back part had a gate that opened so wide to let the tractor in to get the ground ready for the hugest potato crop, Pumpkins and every fruit tree except apricots. We, too, have greens galore, strawberries are fruiting slowly.Your bowl looks delicious.

    1. We always had a large garden as well. I would really miss mine if I had to give it up.

  2. Tamsen & Co arrive today, and the temperature is -3 C. I think they're in for a shock.

  3. That means it must have been the first day of meteorological winter here. I didn't hear it mentioned but the temperatures certainly suggested it was so. My dad used to go to all sorts of trouble so we could have new potatoes on Christmas day - it involved putting them in a tin full of sand and storing it in a cool place if I remember rightly.

    1. We don't usually hear the term but our Weatherman on the News mentioned it. New potatoes on Christmas day in the U.K. sounds impressive.

    1. I hope we will be getting some sunshine. Last summer was non existent with cyclones and very little sun.

  5. Fresh potatoes from the garden are so full of flavour. I remember them from my father's garden and the last time we were in NZ my gardening sis on law boiled some from her garden. Delicious , especially with NZ butter

  6. Our days are shorter, and it is cold here - the heating is on, but fresh potatoes are always lovely at anytime of the year.

    1. One flake of snow in the surrounding hills makes the News here. I can't imagine -6 degrees, we didn't even get a mild frost last winter.

  8. The potatoes look like a good size. So far in my vege garden the cabbages and broccoli are doing the best, my spinach is going to seed so I need to buy some more of those.

    1. Yes, the spuds were a reasonable size. I have finished with brassicas for now still have silverbeet. Summer veg now - tomatoes lettuce, courgettes, capsicum, sugar snap peas and beans. What I have seen of your new garden looks great.
