NEIGHBOURS

It must be about 8 - 10 months ago that we got new neighbours - a young couple renting with at that stage a toddler and the wife expecting.  Now with, a 2 year old little boy and baby daughter.  They have had quite a few parties and continued over lockdown but the noise stopped at a reasonable time.

Last night, however, when I went to sleep it was reasonably quiet but I was woken by loud "music" with extra loud base noises.  I checked the time and it was 1 a.m.  I got up and put my bedroom light on and then the spare bedroom or office light.  It turned out that Doug, who is nearer to the light and noise had not had much sleep at all.

After I turned the lights on the music went quieter but when Doug looked out of his window there was smoke billowing from their garage.  He called out to see if they wanted him to call the fire brigade but they were all high and we just got repetitions of Call the F...ing fire brigade, call the f...ing fire brigade.  The lad who lives there did  grab the hose and put it out but there was acrid smoke for some time.

We have no idea what it was that they had set on fire but luckily things quietened down after that and the fire was out.  It took me a long time to get back to sleep as I could still smell the acrid smoke.

We know there is usually vast quantities of beer drunk but last night it seemed as though they were on something a lot stronger than that.  I hope we don't get a repetition tonight.

  1. We recently suffered from noisy neighbouring holiday makers. They were playing 'Rap' music until 5 am (when I get up), and on one occasion shouting to each other poolside until 7 am. Since then all new holiday makers have been very well behaved; thank goodness!

    1. Unfortunately, these are not temporary holidaymakers. I see boxes of beer going inside for tonight.

  2. Do you have a noise control at your local council ? Call them, record it on your phone, call every night if you have to. Just the opposite where we are, next door helps with firewood, fills up the wood inside and at the back door, get the housework done once a week, and this afternoon, ones across the road came over, their 2 older wee girls with a gift each, one a steak pie, the other an apple pie, ample for 2 meals for us each. " Just thought these might help, as we heard you both had not been so well lately. I was so taken aback, so thankful, hope you might get some like ours one day.

    1. We have now put the Noise Control number on our phone. I think my main worries last night were the fire, smoke and the state they were in. Only afterwards did we think we should have taken a photo of all the smoke billowing out of the garage. It seems as though it was the barbecue in the garage. Yes, good neighbours would be nice. We have good ones opposite. Glad yours are good.

  3. These days it seems that wherever you go in our world there are people that do not conform to the once held normal niceties that we all grew up with.

    1. Unfortunately, that is so true, Rosemary. Previously we had a lovely solo mother renting there.

  4. Oh, to be two years old and be able to sleep through it all! The sad part of your story is that the revellers themselves probably don't remember much about it - what an annoyance to everyone.

    1. You are right about that although I think there was a burnt barbecue to remind them.

  5. Maybe time to ask your local constabulary to have a chat to them.

    1. We had thought of that but do not want to antagonise them. If it happens again we will at least call noise control.

  6. My gosh, these people, with two small children, were too high not to notice the fire in the garage until Doug called. That could have been a catastrophe.

    1. I think they had noticed the fire and the guy from the house put it out with the hose. It wasn't even a party they just had one friend who often stays overnight but they made enough noise for a huge party.

  7. Could you get in touch with the person who owns the property? Also, like you say, not good behaviour with 2 small children around.
