PEACHES AND JACARANDA

As usual, we went to the Growers' Market first thing this morning. It was slightly later than usual and was about 7.15 a.m. when we left the market and stopped to drop some library books off  when I took this photo of the Jacaranda outside Forum North (The Town Hall).

We bought our usual avocados, tomatoes and kumara plus some peaches.  When I got home and put the peaches out the scent was strong.  It always takes me back to my childhood.  Usually, in summer, my mother would take my brother and me from Surrey to Oswestry in Shropshire to stay with her sister.  We had to change trains (and stations) in London and mother would buy a peach and with a lovely small knife that she carried would divide it into three and we would all enjoy this rare taste.

25 ° today and still no sign of rain although I see some forecast for later in the week - have not heard more of where the cyclone is headed after doing its worst in Fiji but even if it comes our way it will be downgraded.

  1. I was watching a Rick Stein programme about Thessaloniki recently. He was picking Peaches in an orchard of huge ancient trees. I almost wanted to move there!

  2. I love those Jacaranda trees, something which doesn't seem to grow in the UK. I couldn't eat peaches when I was young - something about the furry texture of the skin set my teeth on edge!

    1. There are lots of Jacaranda trees here in Whangarei. They are lovely at this time of year. I peel my peaches.

It is good to get an earlier start, you see the best of the day often enough

    1. The peaches we bought yesterday are so perfectly ripe that the skin just peels off. I am a lark and much prefer to do things in the morning (all depending on what time I wake). This morning I was weeding and planting at 7a.m. would have been earlier but I slept in.

  4. If ever you find yourself in southern Ontario when the peach harvest is underway, you will enjoy the finest peach you will have ever tasted. And for a few short weeks they are even affordable!

  5. I have happy memories of delicious sun-warmed peaches, with juice dribbling down the chin!
