The first day of Spring although not particularly warm. We have actually had a warmer than usual winter and Doug has released about 450 Monarch Butterflies they have continued to emerge all through winter.
Today there was this newly emerged butterfly on a banana leaf.
We had a very poor insect year in France. No Crickets, no Cicadas, only one Stick Insect, and very few Dragonflies. I suspect it was the baked hard soil that hindered their emergence. I hope this hasn't affected their futures.
ReplyDeleteHave not seen dragonflies here for some years. There were lots when we lived further north.
ReplyDeleteSuch an interesting texture contrasting between the butterfly and the banana leaf.
ReplyDeleteWelcome. Yes, they are usually on flowers so it was unusual to see one on this banana leaf.
DeleteThat is a great achievement - well done Doug.
ReplyDeleteSuch a mild winter means they have not stopped.
DeleteI hope the Butterfly Man continues the fantastic job he is doing for a long long time yet to come :)
ReplyDeleteWe hope so.
DeleteMarvellous the way you nurture the monarch butterflies. They are beautiful
ReplyDeleteThat was a really good specimen.
DeleteThat stands out so well on the leaf!
ReplyDeleteWe are well down on the insect count..even midgies!!
I think we have less of other insects but the Monarch's are thriving.
DeleteIt's been warmer here lately, can definitely notice the difference and days are getting longer.
ReplyDeleteWe commented yesterday that it is warmer in the South Island.
