FRIDAY

Just over a week ago Doug made a G.P. appointment for me as my chronic sore throat was getting worse as it tends to in winter.  The earliest appointment was today.  Of course, the throat was not quite as bad today but I still wanted to discuss it with her.  Last night I decided to look out a report from when I had a specialist appointment about my throat which I thought was a couple of years ago.  I found the report and it was five years ago but also mentioned visits to the specialist going back to an operation on my nose in the 1960's.  The cause of the sore throat is my nasal passages and she was able to make a few suggestions.  I realise it is just a matter of managing.  I was also able to have my annual diabetic check done and get a form for various blood tests.  The doctor is very good in that she doesn't rush things but that tends to make her run late which meant that it was well over an hour before I came out.

When we got home I made some tomato and capsicum sauce from our tomatoes in the freezer as I think yesterday's beans need some more sauce.  I then started to make some hummus.  I was quite certain I had a fairly new jar of tahini but when I went to get it I found there was just a small amount in an old jar and I must have imagined buying the new one.  Anyway, I went to Mr. Google and used some peanut butter instead of the tahini.  I then realised that the first of our lemons is not quite ripe so used some apple cider vinegar instead.  I actually think I prefer it to the "proper" hummus and I know Doug will as he has never been a fan but as he loves peanut butter he is bound to like this one.

  1. You'll have the Hummus Police coming round to see you. As soon as my jar of Tahini is an inch from the bottom, I start to panic and buy more. However, I shall remember the Peanut Butter trick.

    1. I don't usually eat peanut butter, it is Doug's, but it makes a good mock hummus.

  2. I much prefer peanut butter to tahini, in my homemade hummus. This is the only way I can tolerate peanut butter, can't choke it down otherwise!

    1. I was pleasantly surprised. I agree with you. I usually eat a mixed nut butter.

  3. I do like humus but I don't make it. A favorite of mine is lemon humus from Whole Foods. That was good you found the peanut butter substitution.

  4. I read in the Sunday Times magazine this week that people are finding different kinds of combinations of food that work as they, like you, haven't found what they were looking for in the larder.
e.g. pitted date filled with peanut butter and finished with a pinch of sea salt apparently tastes like a Snicker.

    1. Sounds as though it would be better for you as well. When my mother had visitors back in the 1950's I remember she always stuffed dates with cream cheese. Not sure if Cream cheese was available then but I was always delegated to mash grated cheese with milk until it was of a consistency acceptable to my mother. I was then allowed to remove the pits and stuff the dates.

    2. My mother did the same when she had a cocktail party - she stuffed them with very finely shredded strong cheddar cheese - I loved them.

    1. Thanks Molly, it is a lot better but, unfortunately, as the Hospital notes stated, it is with me for life.

  8. I often think that I have purchased more Tahini, then get to making hummus only to find that I have a nearly empty jar! The peanut butter trick sounds interesting. I've often used lime if I've no lemons on hand. It's edible, but a tinge different, flavor-wise, as you might imagine.
