BACK TO THE BUSH

A friend told us that the walk along the Hatea River from Mair Park to Whareora Road is open again following the floods in July so Doug and I went there today to check it out for Monday's Parkinson walk.

This is the sign as one enters the park

Some child must have left the pig in a car behind.

Not sure if these are the same ducklings we saw last time.  They came running towards us but there were only 4 (the last one was a bit slow).

The digger and mechanical wheelbarrow used to cart the mix for the tracks

They have made a wonderful job of the tracks.  I went and thanked the workers after our walk (they were working on the next part of the track.  I asked about the mix as it is really good.  It looks as though it would just disintegrate in the first rain but, actually, holds together very well.  Apparently it is stones with just a small amount of clay.

Here they had to rebuild the track.  The retaining "wall" is about two feet tall.

At the end of the track this large eucalyptus had fallen.  If it had fallen the other way it would have made a mess of a house.

Doug is pointing to the point where debris has been left in the shrubs from the high water.

For part of the walk we could hear the river.

The track was excellent so we will be walking it on Monday.  We drove to the far end of the track from our house which was 3 kms away.  The closest end of the track is 2 kms.

  2. Lucky for people today that the early settler had the foresight and largesse to donate the land for public use, and that unscrupulous politicians have not developed it.

  3. That's not a track, that's a highway - a magnificent piece of work that hopefully will be enjoyed for for many years.
